Christmas
The post you all waited for so long!!! On Saturday, December 19, the daughter of my host dad Al, Leanne, arrived at the airport in the evening. She is living close to Toronto, ON and goes to university. But I wasn't there to pick her up, because I was at the Christmas party of Julia's club (RC Calgary East). We played 'Secret Santa' and I got three different kinds of honey :) Yummy! On Sunday morning I got to know Leanne. We got along really well and she is so nice. On December 21, I met my friend from school and two friends of her to make christmas cookies and Froebelsterne. It was a lot of fun!! ;) On my birthday I went to Rotary. The gave me a birthday cake and I had my own birthdaysong :) Thanks to everyone who thought of me that day! I got a furhad from Rosemary in behalf of the club. NOW, I look Canadian :D. After that I had some of the exchange students over to my house and Marco got tickets for a Juniors Hockey Game. And John, Vini, Marco and I, we watched Canada 3:0 Finnland! It was my first game in the Saddledome - the arena in Calgary. With four Brazilians at the mall on the 23rd was not pleasant, especially when they all speak Portuguese together...In the morning I got my first Canadian haircut! :) It looks a lot better now.
And now to our Christmas: Most people decorate their houses with christmas lights, and all the parks in the city are decorated! Really nice! The christmas trees are not as casual as in Germany. My parents say, "We just take the ornaments out of the boxes and when we don't feel like decorating anymore we just finish." :D Therefore, most of the christmas trees here have all colours you can imagine and all different shapes you can imagine on them! But isn't that great? So you get a new ornament every year and you can put it on, 'cause it fits anyways. All the houses are decorated. Our stairs hat decoration, all the decorations on the tables were changed into christmas and a lot of pictures are changed during that time as well. But other than that you don't feel that christmas is coming. No cookies (I mad christmas cookies for my host family), no singing, nothing! Luckily, I had the adventcalendar of Petra! :) All the presents go under the christmas tree as soon as they are wrapped. I wrapped mine on Christmas Eve^^. That day we had the parents of my host parents over for dinner. Christian (he was an exchange student from Denmark 7 years ago and lived with Barb&Al) came over as well and we spent a very nice evening together. And the actual Xmas is Christmas Day (December 25). I got up at 8:30 am and at 9 o'clock we got our stockings. In there was chocolate, a book, a magazin, a lipstick and all those little things. The highlight from that were the mittens from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. We prepared our dinner - as usual on special days: TURKEY!! Our breakfast was bacon, toast, pancakes - everything that's good. We unwrapped our presents afterwards. Al pickec a present for every one of us and we unwrapped all at the same time. I don't really know what the others got...and finally, everyone opened their last present all together. Of course we had to clean up the garbage for tonight. All the presents went back under the tree. Oh by the way, no one here is allowed to ligth candles and so we had electric lights; coloured and white. And for me everyone seemed to have the same ideas. From Germany I got chocolate and pictures. And from here I got souvenirs and Canadian chocolate. So that I can remember everything. I gave three Erzgebirgsengel to my host family. Again Christian came over to unwrap his presents with us, but then he left. Al's family came over for dinner. Everyone got a cracker and in there was a papercrown for everyone that we had to wear during dinner. I LOVED THAT DINNER!!!! After all those busy days we all needed a day off. On Boxing Day (December 26), we stayed at home and read, watched TV and the others had a nap. It was one of the best breakfasts today during the whole year -> left-over turkey on toast with gravy and stuffing!! Just delicious *mhhhh*. It originally was a day where everyone gave something to the poor families. And today all the stores have big sales and therefore, the malls are really crowded. I wasn't there, but I can imagine it, because the next day i went to the mall. I love that all the stores are opened on Sundays as well!! And still everything was on sale. In one store they closed their fitting rooms. Who buys clothes without trying them on?!! And when you imagine how big the lineups were the day before...incredible. I bougth a blue Ipod Nano with 8GB! After going shopping alone I met Leila and Vishesh and together we watched 'Did you hear about the Morgans'. Hmm, I go to movies farely often here - whatelse to do if you don't hang out at someone's house? On the 28th, we went for Chinese food with Al's mum. I had to try cooked oyster *brrr*. But at least I tried it and ALL the other food was soooo good - squid, gingerbeef, eggplant, rice. And I learned how to handle chopsticks. It still looks a little awkward but who cares :D. On Tuesday, there was an informal Rotary meeting where we just ate sandwiches and talked. I wished everyone a happy new year in German and had to explain that we don't say 'Happy New Year' before midnight on December 31st. With Barb and Leanne I sent my laptop away and met John (Sweden) and his Swedish family at a Mall, because he was sent home on January 6th. In the evening we went to Zoolites. So beautiful and again you can see that everything is decorated with christmas lights. On the second last day of 2009, some of us went for lunch with John; the last time we all saw him...I shopped in downtown and in the evening it was my first Flames game! I went with my hostsister Leanne and we both really enjoyed that game. I bougth a jersey 3 days before and we got an official puk! We watched the warmup out of the penalty box and her uncle explained how everything works there. Did you know that they freeze the puks and change them at least 5 times a period in order to avoid them from bouncing? The Flames beat Los Angeles 2:1 and it was a game with a lot of fights that happened right in front of us. We sat 4th row right behind the goal!!
My New Years seemed to be boring, because the event in downtown we wanted to go to got canceled. Luckily, Julia asked me if I want to come to her house. And so after fancy dinner with my family (we had lobster and beef, after shrimps as apetizer) I did go and we watched the movie 'Big Daddy'. For midnight we joined her neighbours. Firework is illegal and so everyone just wishes a happy new year at 12am...It was so quiet and at 12:30am most of the people leave and go to bed. I really didn't like that and I missed the German SILVESTER!! We left at about 1 and watched another movie - Uptown girls. And finally went to bed at 3am. It was still a nice day but nothing really unusual. The first day of 2010, Julia and I watched 'It's complicated' in the movie theatre. Another 'food experience' was Sushi on the 4th of January. It was good, but so different and I don't really like soy sauce. I went back to school January 5. Just one week of school, because we get exambreak January 13!! :) And we did nothing really challenging. We had the Calgarian legend of hockey, Theo Fleury, at our Rotary meeting. A really inspiring speech. On Wednesday, I went to our semester shutdown. Dancing non-stop for 3 hours^^. I was really tired when it ended and my legs hurt. On Thursday, we met with the exchange students and went to Chinook Mall. Guess what? we watched another movie. "Invictus" about South Africa and Nelson Mandela. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen. On the 8th of January, Julia celebrated her birthday and Leila, Yin-Yin and I slept over at her house. Again we watched movies. The next day we all were lazy and in the afternoon we went to Ana (Brazil) to celebrate her birthday. Everyone slept over at her house and the next day we had to say good-bye to Anne (Holland). She also has to go home, but not because she has to, it is because her mum is sick. On Sunday, I watched Warren's Hockey game in Okotoks with Dave and Diana. I am always so happy to see Rocky!! Monday nothing special except for school happened and Tuesday was our last day of Semester 1 classe. So sad that I don't see some of them anymore...after school we hung out and watched 'Youth in revolt'. On Wednesday (my first day off), I had my Part A English final in the morning and after finishing my trifold I went to Sunridge Mall where I met Vishesh and Marco. Vishesh was so mad without reason and so Marco and I went to the move theate alone. This time we watched "Leap Year". I really liked that movie. Yesterday was another lazy day - talking to a lot of people in Germany, cleaning my room, doing my laundry and so on. I have to make "Thank you"-cards for christmas, that is tradition in my hostfamily...Today I will go skiing for the first time! I hope I could answer all your questions! Now I will keep up with my blog. And I will upload some pictures later! Love, Bente

School November to the end of 1st Semester
What I did at school the past 2.5 months:
I start with my period 1 class, which is Art. We learned about colour theory and had to do a painting with acryllics, after that we did an OP-Art (cutting), Embossing, and then we did Gargoyle masks out of clay. That was so much fun and we finished them off with shoe polish and silver/gold. Our final project were dragons with chalk pastels. We projected a researched picture on the wall and drew the contures. So we just had to worry about layering the colours. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it unexcepted. Yesterday I spend the morning at school to put my artwork on a trifold, so that they can present it at 'Celebrate Western' - our school open house. Check out the pictures to see all the artwork I did. Just old Albert Einstein is missing :D He is now living with Mama.
Period 2 is Foods: Our fourth module was Fruits&Veggis&Grains. I found it quite boring...The week before Christmas we build our own Gingerbread Houses. That was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it! Our last module was Meat; unfortunately we did all our practical assignments with beef.
In English I had my Midterm on November 12. I did really bad, but whatever. Our topic after was 'The Hero's Journey' and we watched Whale Rider and Harry Potter. Finally, everyone had to prepare a formal speech about a REAL hero. I did Mahatma Ghandi and got 100%!! Really proud of myself. Our student teacher introduced short storys to us with palmistry. Nobody really got the purpose of that...And then we had to write our own short story after doing some research. I wrote about a girl who is living in the Indian slums, getting Malaria and in the end she gets adopted by a German family. I did quite good on that. I really don't have the feeling that my language is worse than the English from other students. I really didn't enjoy our last module before the holidays -> paranormal anthology! Again we watched a movie - Poltergeist. On the last Friday we watched 'How the Grinch stole Christmas'. I loved it! And when we got back to school after the holidays, it was time for - guess what?! - another movie, named 'White Squall' and based on a true story. We read poems and listened to songs about community, strength, etc. And yesterday from 8.30am to 10.30am I had my Part A Final. It was a critical response about any of the literature/movies that we did during class time. I don't know how I did.
And my last period is...GYM!! We all had to do Crosstraining&CPR. I actually learned how to do breast compressions and use an AED. We did suicide - groups competing in little challenges. My group became 4/6. And then I had Marshall Art. How I hated that! I did really bad and some people never took anything for serious...it was really bad. The week before the holidays we did dancing. Monday it was Jive and Twostep, on Wednesday and Thursday it was HipHop with a professional instructor (I don't know what I should think about this kind of dance) and on Friday we did partnerdances again. Last week we did Handball. I can tell you that it was NO fun at all because nobody here knows the rules! And no one took it for serious and so we just played a game that didn't look like handball at all. I had no fun, but others obviously did...
That's for school. Check out the pictures and write to you soon about my Christmas!!! I promise...

November/December in CANADA!!
Finally, I have time to update my blog. It has been a long time since the last post, but I have been so busy and I know that I will need a lot of time now, because so much happened. Friday, November 6th, I was at the Glenbow Museum with Vishesh. It tells the history of Alberta. At the weekend, I went on a roadtrip with Warren's hockey team. The first game was in Rimbey, not a very attractive village...Small villages here are so different from German ones: every village has an own infrastructure (school, grocery store, ...) and the houses are all made out of wood and have flat roofs. At the icerink we had Hotdogs for dinner in the parking plot. I slept in a hotel room with Dave and Diana and the next morning we left for another game in Blackfalds. It was probably the best game they've ever played. But the weekend was successful and very nice :). I sent my christmas presents to Germany, and they arrived just 4 weeks later - another success! November 10th, our Rotary meeting was in the evening at the Military Museum; the next day was Rememberance Day. It is in rememberance of the Canadian soldiers who died in order to defend the country. At school we had a Rememberance Day assembly; they choir sang and the band played and in the end we had a silent minute. The same day, we had TWO fire drills at school - why? I don't know. On Wednesday (November 11 and the actual Rememberance Day), I had a day off and met Julia and Leila to go to the Zoo. I bought a season ticket and now I can go whenever day I want to! :) It was just $34, one entrance is $12. Friday after school, I hang out with Victoria and her friends for lunch. The RC Calgary West had their Christmas Party and they invited all the exchange students to come. Everyone did a little presentation about the christmas traditions in their home countries, that was really interesting. For dinner I had very good salmon and we danced. The party was over too fast, at least for us exchange students. 12 o'clock and we are supposed to go?! :D Vishesh (India), Vini & Marco & Ana (Brazil), John (Sweden), JP & Leila (France), Julia (Switzerland)and Yin-Yin (Taiwan) were there. What a great evening! The day after, I met Ana, Vini, Marco, John and JP at Market Mall. Ana and I went shopping without the guys and when we met again I left for another hockeygame of Warren in Strathmore. They won again! November 15th, a Sunday, I went to the Zoo with Vishesh. At the Rotary meeting on Tuesday, it was the district governor's turn. He belongs to our club and took me to Waterton. In the afternoon I met Leila, John, Marco and Julia at Chinook Mall and together we watched '2012'.
Thursday was Dave's birthday and for dinner we had beef and lobster. November 20 - 22, I took Vishesh up to the cabin of Dave & Diana in Invermere. We had a hot tub both nights. I LOVE that! Saturday morning we went to Invermere for having Brunch and then went to friends, who also have a cabin up there. After a nice little walk through their community, it was time for relaxing and so we watched 'Munich' downstairs in their basement. This weekend, the keyboard of my laptop broke :( And finally, it is coming back tomorrow - that took a long time, eh??!
I went to school for 7am in order to go to the first try-out (basketball). It was so much running, I thought I didn't do too bad and I went to the next practice on Tuesday after school, but on Wednesday it turned out, that I didn't make the team...
November 24th, I spoke at Rotary after a loooong time and I even had pictures to show them - much easier. :) John was at my meeting and our speakers talked about the Grey Cup Festival. That is like the Stanley Cup, just for Football. The final was in Calgary (they didn't make the semifinals). All the exchange students participated in the parade in downtown and I watched the game on Sunday afternoon with my family and some of their friends. Saskatchewan 27:28 Montreal. They lost in the last second because of the 13th player (it was supposed to be the fans, but they turned out to be the 14th player in the end :D). The last field goal of Montreal missed, and because of the additional player they got a 10-yard-penalty and repetition, and of course, this time, they made it and so they won, after they were behind ALL game!! It was pretty dramatic :D And I turned into a Riderfan (Saskatchewan) because of the parade; everyone was green ;). Vini stayed over at my house for the weekend and on Friday night we hung out with Augusta (Norway), Anne (Netherlands) and Vishesh. The parade was on Saturday in the morning and we had a lot of fun standing on a truck and waving to the fans. We went to the Zoo and then wanted to watch a movie, but because it was so crowded we decided to go to my house and play Pool. Marco stayed over this night as well and the next day, Vishesh, Anne and Augusta came over again. And again we played Pool. After they left, the game started. That was an exciting weekend, I can tell you!!
And then it was already December and the change to my second host family came closer. So I packed my things - how am I supposed to just take 2 suitcases home?! I have to get rid of a loooooot of stuff. o.O This week, it was Vishesh at my Rotary meeting. My last dinner was salmon, I wanted to have that!! :) My second host mum, Barb, picked me up after dinner on Wednesday, December 2nd. That was the first time, I ever met my host dad, Al, who is really nice. The house is in Mount Royal, one of the most beautiful communities with the biggest and oldest houses. Our house is quite new and not that huge. Again, I have my own bathroom and a king bed in my room. I unpacked all my bags that night and feel home. After school on Thursday, it snowed for the first time this year, I went to the train station and met Ana, Marco and Vishesh for the RC Calgary South (Ana's Club) meeting. It was very different from my meetings, but very nice ;). We spent the afternoon at her house, watching movies. Friday, I went to Marco's Rotary meeting. I went to his house and slept over. He didn't remember where is apartment is and so we went around for 1.5 hours - in the cold! It was at least -17 degrees and windy o.O For Vishesh's birthday party on Saturday, his host dad drove us there. It was a spontaneous sleep-over at Marco's house. But it worked better than I thought, without having ANYTHING! We watched movies and talked and slept over at his counselor's house. Barb picked me up after breakfast on Sunday and I helped out at the Senior's Xmas Party of our RC. On my next Rotary meeting, I had Marco and Vishesh visiting me. On Friday, Wing-Kee picked me up at my house and we left for the big hiking/snowshoeing tour at Rogers Pass. Vishesh and his daughter Victoria came, amongst another family with 3 children (two boys my age and a girl grade 6). We arrived at 10 and prepared everything for the walk. At 10.30 we left and after half an hour we came to the alpine hut. It was freezing cold and we started the fire places. The 'bedrooms' were upstairs and we prepared the beds and went to bed. I left on almost all my clothes (including my hat), because it takes long until it heats up. I slept quite good and the next morning we had fancy sandwiches for breakfast. All the kids played outside in the snow! That was a lot of fun :) In Calgary it was -30 degrees over the weekend; luckily, it was just -15 where we were. In the evening we had turkey and played games, and then went to bed. This night was much warmer. We had no electricity and just an outhouse, the drains were frozen so we couldn't put the water down, instead we put it in buckets. We melted the snow over the five in big pots for drinking water. :)
The next week, nothing special happened, except for the last day of school on Friday, December 18th. Btw, my new host family has a very cute cat named Moby!! :) I never saw a cat making as much noise...
I believe this is a good time, to start with another entry, just about the christmas time. Don't you think?!
